After endless delays and arguments over perceived civil rights violations, Contra Costa County becomes the ninth county to approve an assisted outpatient treatment program, where “pleasing the judge” is often the most effective tool in treatment team’s kit.

Statewide, counties are implementing assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) programs at a faster rate and without fear of possible lawsuits from Disability Rights California, which had swayed many counties but failed to take legal action.

While supervisors are to be applauded for their action, it did not occur in a vacuum, and elected officials specifically recognized family members and advocates Teresa Pasquini, Douglas Dunn and Alameda County resident Candy DeWitt for pushing the issue forward over the years.
