How fitting that the recipients of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize are advocates for children, and that one of them is barely more than a child herself. Our children, after all, are the best hope we have for eventual peace in this world but are also among our most vulnerable members. They need principled champions to fight on their behalf.

The Nobel committee had 278 names to choose from, but selected 17-year-old girls advocate Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarth, 60, whose work to stop child labor and human trafficking have been characterized as nothing short of “heroic.” Others mentioned for the honor included NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta and Pope Francis.
