The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied a request for disaster relief for hundreds of residents who lost homes in Washington wildfires, prompting criticism—including from President Barack Obama's Democratic allies in the state.
Elizabeth Zimmerman, FEMA deputy associate administrator, approved Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee's request late Tuesday for disaster aid for various local and tribal agencies impacted by the state's worst fire outbreak on record. But she denied assistance for "individuals and households" in hardest-hit Okanogan County, along the Canadian border.
Ms. Zimmerman didn't elaborate, except to say damage assessments determined the impact to residents was "not of the severity and magnitude" to warrant FEMA assistance.
