Environmentalists have jumped on the public release of documents about the threat to the coastline of an oil spill off the coast of New Zealand to back their calls for drilling to be halted.

Maritime New Zealand released the documentation that Texan oil giant Anadarko submitted in support of its application to drill off the Raglan coast and in the Canterbury Basin today.

It includes its own modelling of what would happen should there be a spill and its plan to respond to such an event.

MNZ is responsible for signing off on oil spill modelling, emergency response and well control measures.

Greenpeace, which has taken High Court action to try to overturn a decision by the Environmental Protection Authority to permit deep-sea drilling by Anadarko, says the company's own projections show that oil is likely to wash ashore in the event of a spill off Raglan.
