One bill would require  buyers of long guns to pass a written safety test, though in Newtown, the  suspect, Adam Lanza used a weapon registered to his mother.
 
Another bill would limit  access to ammunition, but, ammo is another tool that Lanza apparently had access  to at home.
 
One of the most  high-profile California bills would ban assault weapons, though people who own  those weapons today could simply register them.
