A broad group of elected officials stood behind Rep. Nancy Skinner earlier this week in Oakland as she called for the legislature to pass AB-48 to monitor ammunition sales and restrict high capacity ammo clips.
City Councilmembers Rebecca Kaplan, Libby Schaaf, Larry Reid, Danny Kalb and Noel Gallo and Mayor Jean Quan showed their support of the bill during the press conference Monday at the Elihu M. Harris State Building. Assemblyman Rob Bonta, who co-authored the bill, and members of the Oakland and Richmond School districts also attended.
Pastor Zacary Carey of the True Vine Ministries of West Oakland opened the event by holding a moment of silence to honor the 26 victims of the school shooting in Connecticut. Carey is the founder of S.A.V.E., Stand Against Violence Everywhere, which organizes peace marches and stand-ins at locations of recent homicides.
Skinner said she wanted the legislation to "bullet-proof our communities" Skinner added that "It is easier in California to buy bullets than to buy alcohol, cigarettes or Sudafed cold medicine."
