iPhones get respect that Nikes are denied

The breathlessly enthused reporters didn't mention any concerns about the possible dangers - violence, security, accidents - of having people camp out amid San Francisco's most densely packed shopping square. Nor did they seem to recall that the city has a sit/lie ordinance, which clearly all these people were violating.

Some things, it seems, apply only to some people.

How different this would be if the line were at Niketown, which also happens to be on Stockton Street. All is not well in Nikeville - the Wall Street Journal reported this summer that the company released a stern set of "safety rules" in advance of this fall's much-anticipated LeBron X Nike Plus basketball sneaker.

The sneaker will come with a rumored price tag of $315 and motion sensors and a daunting consumption gantlet: Retailers can't release it at midnight, as is traditional for sneaker releases, but only at 8 a.m. And they're not allowed to post pictures or descriptions of the shoe until after it's released.
