Delivery services are making a comeback, using business models that allow them to avoid building warehouses and fleets of vehicles. And the biggest players in the space are all testing their services in San Francisco.

Last week, eBay said it would begin making same-day deliveries within the city. It joins local startups including Postmates, TaskRabbit, Exec and Instacart on the quest to profit from the widespread antipathy toward running errands.

EBay's service, now in an invitation-only pilot program, offers same-day delivery of goods from select local stores, for an introductory price of $5.
