Symantec Corp. removed its chief executive and gave his duties to the chairman, a corporate turnaround specialist who vowed to end the software maker's lackluster performance.

The company, which makes security and data-center management software, on Wednesday said Enrique Salem had stepped down as president and chief executive at the request of the board.

Mr. Salem couldn't be reached for comment.

He was succeeded by Chairman Steve Bennett, a General Electric Co. veteran who joined Symantec's board in 2010.
