U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News that North Korea launched a long-range rocket in defiance of international powers, but that it failed, breaking up shortly after take-off. World leaders had earlier urged North Korea to abandon plans for the launch, which they believe to be a cover for a missile test. Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton threatened to cut off a food aid deal to the impoverished nation if they proceeded. North Korean officials insisted the rocket was intended for peaceful purposes. The South Korean Defense Ministry announced that North Korea fired the rocket Friday morning at 7:39 but appears to have fallen after breaking up, Bloomberg News reported.
