A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck the Pacific Ocean about 160 miles west of the coast of Oregon, the U.S Geological Survey said, but no tsunami is expected.

A second much larger quake, registering 7.0, was felt near Michoacán, Mexico, a few minutes later.

The Oregon earthquake, which occurred at 3:42 p.m., appeared to be centered near the location where seismic plates intersect.

The geological survey earlier reported that a 3.9 earthquake occurred about the same time 14 miles west of Mendocino but that report was later deleted.
