Nuclear-power plants owned by companies such as Exelon Corp. (EXC) and Entergy Corp. (ETR) by 2016 must have a plan to indefinitely survive blackouts, under the first U.S. rules responding to Japan’s reactor crisis a year ago.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission order, one of three approved today, requires owners to use back-up equipment to ensure that reactors and spent-fuel pools can be kept cool after losing electric power. The nuclear industry has already begun to implement such a plan.
