College presidents want to reelect Obama

President Obama's popularity on college campuses translates into more than just overwhelming support from students -- he's also the overwhelming favorite of college presidents, a new survey finds.

Obama's appeal with well-educated voters gets him the support of 65.1 percent of the 1,002 college presidents surveyed by Inside Higher Ed. He gets even more support from the leaders of public colleges and universities that award doctoral and master's degrees, where 75 percent of leaders say they plan to vote to reelect the president this fall. Though Obama has pushed for more funding and recognition for community colleges, his support among their presidents is at 66 percent, just higher than the overall sample group.

But the news isn't all good on campus for the president.

Obama does worst with the presidents of for-profit colleges, institutions like the University of Phoenix and Kaplan University that Obama's Education Department has worked to regulate more stringently. At the for-profits, 29 percent of presidents plan to vote for Obama.

And, overall, the presidents aren't satisfied with what he's done on higher education, with just 36 percent of those surveyed saying Obama has "fulfilled the promise that many in higher education" saw for him in 2008.
