An Alameda County judge has approved a city-backed gang injunction against 40 Fruitvale residents police identified as gang members.

The approval now gives the city two working gang injunctions covering North Oakland and the Fruitvale and leaves in place a controversial crime-fighting tactic that has received lukewarm support from the City Council.

The injunction, approved by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Robert Freedman, attempts to restrict the actions of 40 named residents of the Fruitvale -- who police say are Norteno gang members -- who have together racked up about 200 arrests and at least 106 convictions, evidence in the case shows.
