Tar Sands Action - 10/21

Friends-

The hits just keep coming. I have three big updates about Keystone XL and our action on the 6th.

- Most importantly: We now have over 3000 people signed up to join the action. That's a lot of people - but it increasingly looks like the 6th will be a turning point for the debate over Keystone XL, and we need to make sure it turns in our direction. It's up to us to keep making this thing bigger.

- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently wrote a letter to Secretary of State Clinton, expressing deep concerns over Keystone XL. He said that it would be "wiser to invest instead in job-creating clean energy projects," rather than Keystone XL. Sen. Reid is the second highest ranking elected Democrat in America, after only to the President himself. His support shows just how powerful your organizing has been - and foreshadows what we can accomplish if we keep working together.

- TransCanada blinked. For the first time, the builders of Keystone XL acknowledged that there are large - and growing - concerns about the safety of their pipeline when they offered to pay for spill cleanup and new safety measures to Nebraska lawmakers in exchange for dropping a bill that would re-route the pipeline. Of course, the payment would cover only a fraction of the real costs of a spill, and the safety measures are purely cosmetic - but it shows that they feel the heat that you're putting on.

Now we need a huge group on the 6th to show President Obama that he has the support he needs to reject Keystone XL, and that there will be real consequences if he doesn't. With scandal brewing and support shifting in our direction, our numbers at the White House could make the difference.

I was hoping you could take a minute to spread the word about the momentum building behind this action with your friends, family and personal network, along with an invitation to join us in DC. There are easy ways to spread the word to your networks set up on our site - can you help share the good news?

Click here @ http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/2133/p/salsa/web/tellafriend/public/?tell_a_friend_KEY=8173 to help us spread the word and keep the action growing.

A lot has happened since we first announced this action, and now we need to double our efforts to get everyone we can out to DC on the 6th. Even if you can't make it to DC yourself, spreading the word about what is happening makes sure that those of us who are at the White House can have the biggest impact possible.

With so much on the line, the number one thing we have to fear right now is cynicism that would keep our friends on the sidelines, out of this fight. You can bring us a lot closer to winning by sharing not only the good news about what we can accomplish together.
