Tar Sands Action - 10/19

Friends -

The momentum behind this movement is just incredible. We're showing a lot of power, both in the media and in the streets, and I'm excited to see what we can do together between now and November 6th, when we return to the White House.

Favorable media is pouring in. In the past two weeks, we were covered on the front pages of the Washington Post and CNN's website, and Bill McKibben published op-ed in the New York Times, the LA Times and the Daily Beast. Robert Redford jumped in with a video op-ed of his own in the New York Times yesterday - the day after they covered TransCanada's illegal use of eminent domain.

Just as important, actions against Keystone XL are rumbling across the country. In those same two weeks, there were rallies to reject Keystone XL at Obama events in four swing states, a fifth is planned today.

But, we know that President Obama is only visiting a handful of places between now and December. If he's not making a stop near you, the best way to make an impact is to get together to visit his campaign staff, who we know will be reporting up the chain of command to the advisors that will help make the final decision on the pipeline.

Events are planned in a handful of places already. If you can't find one nearby, the organizers can help you make plans and get in touch with other Tar Sands Action folks in your area - just shoot us an email.

All of the visits to Obama offices have been great successes so far. Already more than 50 people crowded offices in both Oakland and New York City, and on Saturday in the critical swing state of Ohio our friends visited campaign offices in three cities simultaneously. I was at the event in New York, and the staff member we spoke with said that "everyone from Chicago on down" was paying attention.

If you're wondering what these events look like, folks in Oakland put together a great video and writeup of their visit to a local office that gives you an idea about what to expect: http://www.tarsandsaction.org/oakland-returns-obama-2012-office/

I have no doubt I'll be getting in touch soon with more good news. I can't wait to see what comes next.

PS - We just released a great new video that chronicles the rise of the movement to stop Keystone XL over the past few months. I really enjoyed it, I hope you will too: http://www.tarsandsaction.org/rise-stop-keystone-xl/
