Nationwide emergency alert system test November 9

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will conduct the first nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) test on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at 2 p.m. eastern standard time.

The Emergency Alert System is a public warning system that uses the communications assets of broadcast radio and television stations, cable television stations, satellite radio and television services and wire-line service providers to allow the President of the United States to address the American people during a national emergency.

The message heard by both radio and television will indicate that “This is a test” and may last up to three and a half minutes.

As the Federal, State, tribal, territorial and local governments prepare for and test their capabilities, this event should serve as a reminder that everyone should establish an emergency preparedness kit and emergency plan for themselves, their families, pets, and businesses.
