Superb! Yes, I agree - activists are afraid. Should they be? Absolutely not! Nor should they be monitored. Your political beliefs shouldn't have any bearing on how an employer or potential employer views you. Nor should people be concerned about how others perceive them, for expressing their freedom of expression. Are they? Yes! So, is your speech really free when you are intimidated? No! Is this a huge problem? Yes!
Many of them may be scattered, lost and leaderless, but I don't believe that is a fair assessment for all of them. If they were scattered and lost, would they be able to direct their attention and efforts to a worthwhile cause? Would they be able to organize (even if loosely) and gain the national attention that they have? At times, people may not know all of the facts, or for that matter, be able to articulately express their feelings regarding an issue. However, the gut feeling that something is wrong and the desire to learn more, plus be passionate about such, counts a lot to me. Sure, some of the people in attendance may have been there for "other" reasons. But, overall, I'd say it takes great motivation to involve oneself in such controversial issues (especially when you consider the above mentioned and more). Therefore, I wouldn't say they are "lost." Instead, I'd say they are very much on the right path. Maybe it's those who could attend, but didn't, that are lost.
