For mental health, bad job worse than no job

"'Moving from unemployment to a poor-quality job offered no mental health benefit, and in fact was more detrimental to mental health than remaining unemployed,' says the lead author of the study, Peter Butterworth, Ph.D., a senior research fellow at the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University, in Canberra."

**Opinion**

You see there is a huge discrepancy in numbers between graduates and available positions. Therefore, a recession or the like is many times used to deter the unemployed from acquiring positions that they may desire and moreover, be qualified for. Also, this often times leads to individuals accepting less than desired positions. This is a form of tracking, that in my opinion, targets individuals that are educated and possibly possess experience related to furthering their employment (rather than students of certain socioeconomic backgrounds as it is carried out in the education systems, but, comparable). This mechanism 'weeds out' many applicants due to various reasons.
