**Opinion**
I've echoed the same many times and will continue to do so. Even if you don't get into the field of your studies, or for that matter, ever work a day in your life after completing your studies - your education speaks volumes for you and puts you in a higher class bracket than those who do not have such an education.
Now, let's be clear - while it makes you an educated, well rounded, individual with horizons broadened; it does not mean that you are better than someone that does not have such an education (as many people wrongfully tend to perceive). Instead, it is a matter of preference with interests and future outlook. To those that have made less than desirable recommendations, it isn't difficult to see where your mental is.
