SAVE OAKLAND LIBRARIES

http://saveoaklandlibrary.org/

Here is something that I've been meaning to post. 14 of Oakland’s neighborhood libraries may close due to a budget shortfall. In my opinion, one library closing is too much, but 14 is mind boggling - especially in an area that may need it more than anywhere else. Education, computer/internet access, and programs to keep people progressive (especially in times of 17% unemployment for the city) are all huge reasons as to why the libraries cannot afford to be cut. Due to such, I urge residents to take a look at the options for the proposed budgets found at: http://www.abetteroakland.com/documents/budget2011/scenarioa/201113CompleteProposedBudget_ScenarioA.pdf.

Personally, I don't care for Budget A. Why? Well, lowering the city's quality of life simply isn't an option. Already, there are many problems that need to be addressed - and currently, are not. By further cutting services the public desperately needs you are futher pushing many people who are already on edge. Morale is not the highest amongst the police department from my understanding and even for some within government, therefore, asking the employees to contribute more or have mandatory leave without pay days would most likely lower it even more.

I'd like more information on Budget B before passing an opinion. It seems fairly vague.

The same could be said for Budget C. While I like this option the best, I'm not thrilled about how broad it is written. This option seems the most likely to pass since many of the residents that will vote will quite possibly be senior citizens. Also important to note, two proposals call for more employee contributions, but how much for each budget proposal?

Aside from all of this, they are talking about unknown federal and state cuts to impact the budget. Well, why doesn't The City of Oakland have grant writers applying for assistance wherever they can get it? If they have them, well maybe it's time to think of hiring new ones. The City of San Francisco sure doesn't appear to have that problem.

The Council Finance Committee needs to hurry up and make a decision regarding the Police and Fire Retirement System. I believe that pensions should be lowered, but, employees should not have to pay more into contributions now or while active.

The idea to bring more trade to the port is an excellent idea and more need to follow along those lines. I believe that the way to go is new taxes (within reason), property sales, and more plus increased one-time revenues. Overall, The City of Oakland cannot afford any of the three options and should start or continue discussions with other means of funding - maybe corporate enticement is worthy of checking out.
