United Airlines was hit by widespread computer-network problems on Tuesday that caused hundreds of flight delays at airports around the world, the latest in a series of glitches to affect the world's largest carrier.
The temporary network outage began shortly after 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time causing delays and cancellations and affecting United's website, said a spokeswoman for United Continental Holdings Inc., [UAL -2.63%] the airline's parent. She said United was in the process of resuming normal operations as of about 6 p.m. EDT.
United instituted ground delays at airports in Newark, Houston and San Francisco. United flights were also delayed elsewhere because of the outage.
